It happened during my very first real job. It was just after college, bursting with energy and ideas, and I walked into an office thinking I was about to conquer the world. I had my degree, my confidence, and a head full of big plans. It was all going to go so right. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.
I was given a small project to lead. It wasn’t massive, but it mattered to the company. I approached it like a know-it-all. I ignored advice from colleagues because I thought my way was better. “Why listen to them?” I told myself. “I’ve got this.” Except I didn’t.
Trouble signs were small at first. Deadlines started slippings. Team members got fuzzy on their tasks. Rather than fixing things, I doubled down on the ways that worked for me. If only I work harder; if only I do what it takes…
