Online Coaches…Social Media Or Email Marketing?!?

Unfortunately, this article will be specifically for online coaches.

I’ve noticed that most coaches heavily depend on social media to get clients, particularly Instagram and Facebook. (if you’re one of them, then this is for you.)

I recently saw a post from a coach that said anything other than social media would be too complicated and according to him “do not work” for a starting coach.

Well, I beg to differ.

I am not an online coach myself nor have I helped online coaches to get clients using social media.

Neither am I doubting how effective social media is at getting clients. BUT I am saying that from my experience working with and learning from several coaches who sell their offers through their email list (either entirely through email or a mixture of both email and other media)…

It’s safe to say that having an email list is the safest, more cost efficient and the more profitable way to build an audience and market your offer to consistently either for a starting coach or a more experienced coach.

Ouu…I might have hit a nerve with that statement. All those coaches going “bu..but I’ve built my business entirely on social media and have made a lot of money.”

I’m sure you have. All I’m saying is having an email list is much better in the long run. Hear me out.

You can have a huge following on these platforms, no doubt about that.

Inbound leads flowing in continuously…

Calendars are fully booked…

Sales going through the roof, etc.

Business is booming. All is well in the world (at least in your world)

Until — and I want you to picture this — some bloke behind a computer at either of the social media platforms take that all away from you with just one click of a button while you’re asleep.

You wake up the next day, pull out your phone to check how the content you posted the night before is doing.

Only to be greeted with the login/signup screen. You try to log in multiple times but nothing works.

You’ve lost everything.

Your business crashes.

All the marketing was dependent on platforms that you have no control over.

And now the “owners” have taken it all away. You now have two choices. Either you appeal the decision (if the option appears)…

Or you go under and your business dies.

This very scenario happened to someone I know who had thousands of followers on Instagram. He got lucky and his account was reinstated after he had appealed. But the damage was done.

It took about 2 to 3 weeks for him to get his account back, so he lost a lot of potential clients.

The worst part about all this isn’t even that he lost money but the fact that…

You never know when/if it’s going to happen to your business.

So you’re almost always proceeding with caution, fingers crossed that you haven’t broken any of the many policies being constantly changed.

Unless of course, you have — yes you guessed it — an email list. You don’t have to worry about changing policies and you own every email on that list.

Building one is simple in hindsight but it does take time and consistency. I’ll simplify the steps below but the bulk of the work still lies on your work ethic.

Create a lead magnet.

This lead magnet should be specific to your main offer. It should solve a problem specific to your target market and most importantly it SHOULD BE FREE.

When done properly, people would willingly give you their email addresses in exchange for whatever lead magnet you offer.

Once that’s done, you can mail your list about your offer as much as you want.

Of course, there’s more nuance to it and you can’t just send emails out casually to your list.

Bombarding them with pitchy emails. There’s a science behind it (not to imitate Claude Hopkins)

However, that’s talk for another day. That’s on my list for future articles.

In the meantime, I did share one of the tactics you could use to get your emails to sound less pitchy while still selling your offer.

If you’d like that, it’s right here
