Phase Transitions in Brain Dynamics: A Simple Conversation
Exploring How Phase Transitions Shape Our Cognitive Flexibility
Have you ever wondered how our brain can adapt quickly and efficiently to new situations?
For us, the adaptability of our brains is instantaneous and unconscious. However, beyond that, there is incredible adaptability and plasticity. Scientists have taken an interesting approach to understand how this works: “phase transitions.”
Just like water that changes from liquid to ice or steam, our brain also goes through similar phase transitions. This means it constantly undergoes abrupt changes while at work, which helps the brain stay flexible and responsive.
The Haken-Kelso-Bunz (HKB) Model
Back in 1985, three scientists in tge name of Haken, Kelso, and Bunz, came up with a model which explained how our brain manages these transitions, particularly with respect to coordinating movements. Initially, these folks focused on how we use both hands concurrently. After that, their innovative model, known as the HKB, opened tge door for them to look into and understand much beyond brain dynamics.
