In 1950, McDowell County, West Virginia, was the perfect thriving, dynamic American County.

The county is in the southwestern part of West Virginia, snuggled in the Appalachian Mountains, and has one of the most beautiful scenery in the world. It was known for its coal and railroad history and its association with the mine wars in the region. It had many coal mines that employed most people in West Virginia.

The county residents were friendly to each other and any new person coming into town. In the last 50 years, most coal mines shut down, leaving the area devastated. The departure of the coal industry killed the entire state, and McDowell County fell off the map.

Today, young Americans don't know anything about the region that fueled America's rise to become the world's strongest nation on earth.

Talking to Strangers.

The county has many beautiful mountains and flowing rivers. There are many opportunities for outdoor lovers, such as hiking, exploring, biking, and many more. The county residents love learning about other cultures and interacting with strangers.
