How many of you practice Solitude? Do you sit in silence? Do you spend time with yourself where there are no distractions?

If your answer to the above questions is no, you must look into it. Rumi said, “A little while alone in your room will prove more valuable than anything else that could ever be given you.” Practising silence is one of the most essential things you must do daily. It will help you clear your mind.

Rumi says, “The quieter you become the more you are able to hear”. That’s why I used to sit for 15 minutes in silence and observe what was happening in my mind. I would analyze the thoughts that came to my mind.

For instance, if a negative thought came up, I would question its validity and try to replace it with a positive one. You will see that your brain never sleeps. It is constantly thinking about one thing or another.

Solitude, when embraced as a consistent practice, can be a transformative tool for self-discovery and mental peace. It can unveil your deepest thoughts and bring clarity to your mind. The key is to make it a daily habit, not just an irregular practice.

As you engage in this practice, you will better understand your thoughts. You will learn more about yourself, your true essence, and your thoughts. Sometimes, you may feel a lot, but often unconsciously.

You need to sit and calm your mind. Now, see what thoughts are coming into your mind. Are they relevant to you? Do they serve any purpose, or are they just random thoughts about problems, neighbours, friends, things, or anything you don’t want to focus on?

If your thoughts do not align with your goals, it’s a sign that you need to work on yourself to improve. It’s not a one-day job; it requires consistent practice. But when you commit to this daily practice, you will see tangible results.

Here are some steps you can follow

  • Fix a time when you can sit silently for at least 15 minutes. I do it early in the morning, as there are no distractions.
  • For silence time, keep all distractions away from you. Do not use your mobile or do anything except analyze your thoughts.
  • Write down what thoughts come to your mind. Do not stop them from coming; analyze them. It will help to dump your brain.

Leo Babauta says, “Solitude, in these days as much as ever, is an absolute necessity.” As an introvert, I love Solitude and work in Solitude, too. But extroverts, you need to practice it. It’s not about changing who you are but enhancing your mental well-being.

Sitting in silence for 15 minutes will calm your mind and provide a much-needed break from the constant stimulation of social interactions.

Doing it early in the morning will help you stay grounded throughout the day. But it’s not mandatory. You can do it anytime. Whenever you need some time for yourself, go in silence.

As Maxime Lagacé quotes, “Solitude helps you find peace. Peace helps you find happiness.” Silence time will bring you joy and happiness. It will keep you motivated to do things and help you analyze your thoughts.

Make it a part of your daily routine and watch the magic happen in your life.
