The grandfather clock in the dimly lit living room chimed midnight, its solemn toll echoing through the empty house. Joseph Ezekiel Naulty, startled from a fitful sleep, sat up in bed, a cold sweat clinging to his skin. A sense of unease, a primal fear he couldn’t shake, gnawed at the edges of his consciousness.
He listened intently, straining to hear any sound that might explain his sudden anxiety. The house was silent, the only sound the rhythmic ticking of the clock and the distant hum of the refrigerator. Yet, the feeling of dread persisted, a knot tightening in his stomach.
Unable to ignore the growing sense of foreboding, Joseph slipped out of bed and made his way down the hallway, his bare feet padding softly on the carpeted floor. He paused outside his father’s bedroom door, a wave of apprehension washing over him.
