I was half-listening to NPR Houston as I was visiting my former hometown.

The words of a former mayor of Prairie View Texas penetrated my overwhelmed-by-traffic addled brain. “They burned the high school records of black students.”

They what?

In Luling TX, if a black school closed in the 1960s, the records were not transferred to a safe place.

Nope. They were burned.

Destroyed.

No proof remaining someone even attended the school.

No proof they graduated.

High school diploma to get a job? More education?

No records. No proof.

Lives were destroyed.

Racism.

Recourse?

Nothing then, but now…

We white folks have to, have to, stop standing on the sidelines allowing things like this to happen today.

We. Have. To. Stand. Up. Now.

Be against racism through open eyes and action.
