I’ve written before about how I enjoy Reading Challenges and the biggest one I do every year is my annual reading challenge, which I’ve tracked on Goodreads every year since 2012.

In 2022 my goal was 70 books, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, I ended up having a bit more time to read than I had anticipated and I ended up at 105 books instead — 150% of my original goal. I’ve listed them below.

Before we get started, I’ve been told that I rate books too harshly, but I try to follow Goodread’s guidelines:

1 star: did not like it
2 stars: it was ok
3 stars: liked it
4 stars: really liked it
5 stars: it was amazing

Most years I’m going for an average of 3.0, and according to my Year in Books, it was 2.9 for 2022, so close enough!

  1. A Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark — 4 stars — I also (correctly, for once) predicted that this one would win the Nebula.
  2. The 7.5 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton — 3 stars
  3. My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix — 2 stars
  4. World of Trouble by Ben H. Winters — 3 stars
  5. The Tangleroot Palace by Marjorie M. Liu — 3 stars
  6. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir — 4 stars — I wasn’t terribly impressed with Artemis, but I thought this one was a fun read.
  7. Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo — 3 stars
  8. Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo — 3 stars
  9. Lock In by John Scalzi — 3 stars
  10. How High We Go In the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu — 3 stars
  11. House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas — 3 stars — This was apparently the longest book I read all year at 807 pages. So far, I find the Cresent City novels trashy, but in a way that I wish HBO would pick up.
  12. This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar — 3 stars
  13. The Unbroken by C.L. Clark — 3 stars
  14. Plague Birds by Jason Sanford — 3 stars
