“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], “uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.” (17:23) Quran Kareem

Respecting and loving one’s parents is a fundamental part of many cultures and religions. Parents are the first caregivers who nurture us from infancy, providing for physical needs as well as emotional support in our earliest years. Though relationships change as children mature into adults, honoring one’s parents lays the foundation for healthy interactions, wisdom, and intergenerational strength within families.

Caring for aging parents who can no longer care for themselves is a demonstration of gratitude for their lifetime of sacrifices. Whether providing financial support, transportation, home-cooked meals, or social engagement, looking after parents in their senior years allows them dignity in life’s later stages and eases what can be a difficult transition. While a trying commitment, fulfilling this responsibility reaps inner peace and satisfies deep-seated human instincts for familial loyalty.
