Have you ever idolized someone only to be let down? Whether famous or familiar, it’s a jarring experience. Why do we put people on pedestals? Are they really any different from us? Let’s explore why we idolize others, how it skews our perspective, and why it’s important to see people as they truly are — human and imperfect, just like us.

Putting people on a pedestal

All of us put others on a pedestal at times. Maybe you praise someone as exceptional or admire them for their achievements or qualities. When we elevate people, we see them as better than or more than others, even if it is only for a moment. But remember, the only reason they are on a pedestal is because we put them there.

When someone places themselves on a pedestal, it’s often a sign of deeper issues. Why would someone elevate themselves? Ego, narcissism, or compensating for personal insecurities might drive them. But living in that illusion of superiority isn’t sustainable. Grounded people don’t look down on others. Instead, they understand that everyone has value.
