Side Country

Poem
Off to the side of the road was the country.
A forgotten piece of land,
like a book tossed aside,
till someone wanders upon it.
The grass sways tall,
entwining itself in a dance with the wheat.
The farmer with no neighbor grows fat and old,
waiting for the city girl to stop on by.
The horses talk to the dog,
about the chicks splashing in the pond.
The house cat sneaks out.
