The rich history of the Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) reflects the evolution of social and recreational activities in Singapore, particularly among the expatriate community. Originally, it was known as Straits Cricket Club, and now housed in a new building opened on 28 June 1997. The old building was demolished and rebuilt in 1994.
As the 3rd oldest Club, the SRC is a social club founded on 23 June 1883 by members of the Eurasian community for Eurasian and non-European communities who were then excluded from the only British-exclusive club, the Singapore Cricket Club (founded in 1852), across the Padang field.
Its original purpose was to provide a space for leisure and recreation amidst the bustling colonial environment of Singapore. The club aimed to foster community among the British and other European residents, offering a range of sports and social activities
The SRC was originally situated at the junction of St. Andrew’s Road and North Bridge Road, near the Padang field, which is a central location that was significant for various social and sporting events. It also embodies both Singapore’s colonial history and its modern identity.
