Social media is distorting the reality.

Behind every good invention there are limitations.

Social media is an essential part of our lives nowadays and why shouldn’t it be. A person who can run a business, find a job, socialize, by just sitting at ease. There is no better way to try these things other than social media.

We connect, share, build relationships, share our expertise, educate ourselves and others and what not using any form of social platform.

While social media has a lot of perks that are beyond layman’s imagination, it also has numerous cons as well.

Gone are the days when family members used to sit together, laugh together and make fun of each other and for other recreational purposes. All that’s left today is each and every family member in his own room using a social media application and when in a group they do the same.

My family is no different in this regard.

Social media has the phenomenon of distorting reality.

Biggest disadvantages of social media:

  • One has become so addictive to social media that it has become our daily habit of checking our mobile phones first when we wake up in the morning.
  • Excessive use of social media results in shrinking the parts of brain associated with maintaining concentration.
  • Each like and positive comment on social media results in the release of the happiness hormones (dopamine and serotonin) which in turn lightens the mood and our mind wants it even more.
  • The 30-second shorts has an enormous impact on our brain, it not only leads to the lack of concentration but also plays a role in constant procrastination.
  • People tend to share too much of their personal lives on social media that they forget who is watching, who is commenting and thus leading to an open life which causes a lot of negativity due to immense negative feedback, bullying, self harm and eventually leaves with suicidal thoughts.
  • We so rely on other people’s lives that we sometimes forget to live our own.
  • Applications meant for specific purposes have lost their charm because they have turned into a chit-chatting platform as in the case of LinkedIn.

Excessive sharing of one’s life also leads to high hopes and high expectations thus making you feel lonely, isolated and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

I don’t have an Instagram account and I left Facebook 10 years ago and I am happy about it. But I still watch a lot of You Tube shorts thus impacting the brain and overall body.

How to avoid social media:

  • I am definitely not recommending quitting social media but make it less addictive instead.
  • Turn your notifications off for some parts of the day.
  • Replace your habits and spend some quality time with your friends and family instead of on your phones.
  • Play more physical games than online games.
  • Temporarily uninstall social media applications.
  • Try doing fun activities with your loved ones to kill boredom.
