Spring Cleaning On A Grand Scale.

Ask not for whom the bell tolls.

Those sleeping bags left over from when the grandchildren went sailing — they’ve been cluttering the cupboard for ages. It’s time we took them to Portchester Library. But why stop at sleeping bags?

The generosity of our local community is legendary. Who knew Portchester had so much Paracetamol or pasta? Our local library (when it’s open) is a collection point for the Jacob’s Well charity that ships vital stuff to refugees fleeing from the madness of Vlad. And when our library is closed the one at Fareham (behind the shopping mall) will happily take in the essentials. But not just any old stuff — the immediate needs of the desperately displaced are quite specific and must be easily transported.

Food must be non-perishable, and this is no time for fashions. Sure, they could use new knickers and nappies — but no socks please — leastways not those rotting in the bottom of your old wellies. Rice and Pasta are firm favourites but last time I looked in the first aid kit it had all passed its bleed-by date. The full list of welcome items is on the poster at the library or probably their Facebook page — if you look at that sort of stuff.

A collection for shipment East went off on Wednesday. The next shipment date will be announced shortly. Meanwhile Jacob’s Well will be saving up for fuel money. I guess the UK Home office will not be sending out visa application forms (pencils not included) but anything you can spare will bring a badly needed smile to some mum in a cold refugee centre a long way from home.

One day, when Vlad gets his cum-uppence, we’ll probably need a similarly charitable response to the poor people of Russia who’ve been hoodwinked on scale ten times greater than those darned Brexiteers of 2016.

Ask not for whom the bell tolls.
