A beautiful historic town in the south of France

All Images belong to author.

If the fates are kind, the wise man gradually releases himself from the harness of the years and shrugs off a lifetime’s work. I first visited the South of France forty-two years ago, having taken a local bus from Nice, wondering where it would take me. The fates were indeed kind to me, for the bus ride ended in the historic walled town of St. Paul de Vence.

There is a lot to charm the traveller and the ‘Old Town’ where one can wander in one’s own sweet way, stepping inside the many artists’ workshops and taking in the beauty of stained-glass windows or thriving on the afternoon smell of freshly brewed coffee. It is an inspiring walk, winding your way through the narrow passages, passing plants and flowers hanging from windows and walls, colourful displays of many handcraft shops, each so individual. It is an enchantment.

The tranquility cannot be understated, yet it is filled with the insatiable curiosity of people and laughter borne by the air…
