Stop Worrying about Getting Older!
Age is just a number
I often hear some people could be so secretive when it comes to their age. They are shy to tell their real age. Some of my friends freak out when their birthdays come. They always say, “Oh shoot! I am getting older!”. I am like,’ You’re not even 30”. Then, I always come up with a reply, ”You should be freak out if you stop getting old. Because if you do, it means whether you are a zombie or you are dead”.
Honestly, I was like that as well. Almost 4 years ago, before my 30th birthday. I was kind of worried about getting older. I will have wrinkles, will be fat, and the list went on. But then, relatives, including my father passed away. I realized I should be thankful that I still could celebrate my 30th birthday. Those people who had left me were 60 plus years old. I still have a lot of time. I know that I could ‘leave’ anytime as well, but I am still alive. I still have a bunch of things to do. To grow mentally, financially, in career, and in relationships.
I stop worrying about getting older. For me, age is just a number. So, for you who are worrying about getting older, this article is for you.
You can still be creative
Based on the research by the National Institute of Aging, music, theatre, dance, creative writing, and other participatory arts shows promise for improving older adults’ quality of life and well-being, from better cognitive function, memory, and self-esteem to reduced stress and increased social interaction.
When you think that getting older can block your creativity, you need to see Stan Lee. He was 96 years old when he passed away. Even before he passed away, Stan Lee still co-created Dirt Man with his daughter.
You don’t have to create a comic or making movies to be creative. First, have the passion to be creative when you are getting older. Find something that is appealing to you. If you like cooking, you can try to make a recipe. If it’s too difficult at the beginning, try to improve on the existing recipes. If you like writing, then find inspiration that gets you to write. If you love music, join a singing community, for instance, at church or community center in your neighborhood.
You still can be productive
Being productive means living with purpose. Whether for yourself or other people. Being productive could spark your life. You will have something to look forward to. As long as you are healthy, you could be productive, no matter how old you are. You might not work in an office anymore, but there are still other ways.
You don’t need to be like Tony Bennett who still performs even when he is 95. You can do it simpler than that, for instance, gardening. You wake up every day with purpose. To take care of your garden. Feed them with good fertilizers and water them. It could be your happiness and pride when they grow healthy and beautifully.
When you get older, you could be productive by finishing what you write and publish it somewhere if your passion is writing. Or to finish your painting and place it somewhere to decorate your house. Simple acts of being productive that you could do when you get older.
Learning doesn’t have expiry dates
You will never be too old or too late to learn something. Don’t grow old only with age, but with knowledge and skills as well. When you never stopped learning, your life will be so lively.
It doesn’t need to be a degree on something. You can learn simple things, for example, baking or pottery. When you have the skills to bake cakes or make a vase, you could teach other people who want to learn. You could also bake cakes to sell to your relatives or just for you to enjoy. You can do this when you are 25, 30, or even 65.
When you feel that you are worthwhile for other people, you will have the youth in you even though you are 70. Your life would be meaningful, when you can help people with your knowledge and skills, despite your age.
Enjoy life when you can
You need to enjoy your life when you can. Stop worrying. Enjoy learning things. Go on holiday. Go out to see sunset and sunrise. Do sports for your well-being. These things are more important than scaring about getting older.
They are refreshing your mind and could give you inspiration, which leads you to be creative and productive. You could get inspiration to write from your holiday or your walks. You could maintain your weight from your sports activity.
Stop worrying about getting older! Be worry when you can’t be creative and productive anymore. Be scared when you can’t learn anything and stop enjoying life. Worrying about getting older could trigger your anxiety, which is unhealthy for you.
