The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart. — Hellen Keller

Life is a combination of pureness and unfairness.

Sometimes things appear to be going your way. For example, you could get promoted | Achieve recognition for your efforts | Somebody lends you favour in a time of need.

“It’s great”, you think. “Things are finally going my way”.

But sometimes you are left alone. For example, you could get backstabbed by the people you trusted | Somebody else takes the credit for your hard work | Nobody helps you out in your time of need.

It’s awful. “I am utterly alone”, You might think.

For the most part, our lives are uncontrollable. We, as humans, are not given much control of how our lives will pan out. We cannot predict what is going to happen in the next moment.

For some people, the notion of not-knowing and injustice is disabling, their life comes to a halt. For others it’s easier, in comparison, to deal with life’s uncertainty, they push forward with every bit of strength they have.

Loneliness and despair is a time to reflect. Reflecting on the little things in life, that we usually take for granted but they bring us joy in subtle and sometimes unnoticeable ways.

Life Is Only a Reflection of What We Allow Ourselves to See — Trudy Symeonakis Vesotsky.

Take some time out and sit in a quiet place. Think about:

Your Body

  • How you can breathe and give ample amounts of oxygen to all the little cells in your body resulting in proper function
  • How all your limbs and nodes are safe and sound and can feel objects

Your Environment

  • Notice how you have a roof over your head and food in your refrigerator
  • Notice you have a comfortable place you can sit, a comfortable bed to give you a good night’s sleep

Your Surroundings

  • The sound health of your siblings and their children
  • Your parent’s being alive happy and healthy
  • Your spouse and the love they have for you and the comfort of their presence
  • Your children, your progeny; the sentiment of hope they bring

These reminders are placeholders, to give direction to the train of thoughts to the most basic of things. Its helps to reshift focus on the positives in life despite the glowingly negative.

Let’s assume for a second that you don’t have many of the things I described above, think about the following:

  • That first sip of coffee or tea in the morning that refreshes you
  • Being able to feel the rain, a common yet complex phenomenon
  • A toddler looking at you and smiling
  • The sight of ducks with its ducklings taking a journey
  • A cute cat or a playful dog in the park
  • Finding a coin on the side of the road
  • Looking at the clouds and seeing objects or animals in the cloud shapes
  • The first sip of your favourite drink
  • Seeing your best friend after a long time

These instances in our life bring a warm solace in harsh times, they cause comfort to the aching heart and bring hope.

Sometimes, taking a deep breath can be the most comforting. It has the power to make us feel like everything is going to be alright.

Reflecting on the goodness in life despite the circumstances will bring you intrinsic comfort. Even when the odds are stacked up high, finding time to sit down and list 5 things you are grateful for in that day will make all the difference.

The universe is harsh but the overall sum of equations is not unfair. What we put into it, is what we get. Projecting positive energy, thankfulness and gratefulness for the smallest of things out into the universe will echo back blessings and cherishable moments.

The laws of physics which state, “Every action has an opposite and equal reaction”, apply into the physical world but the applications in philosophical terms are a bit different. Every action has a magnified and equal reaction. The universe notices and bestows its blessings and goodness to those to take notice of the sweet little things in life.

To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders — Lao Tzu
