Ta Prohm in the Ancient City of Angkor
An ancient temple speaks of the past yet delivers a message for our future.
It was April 2015 and we were on spring break from the Lincoln School in Kathmandu, Nepal. Little did we know that in a few weeks, our tiny bit of civilization in Nepal would be shaken to its core by a mega-earthquake. But that is another story.
We went to Bangkok for a medical exam. Thailand has industrialized medical exams. People like ourselves travel from South Asia, the Middle East, and even the United States for a complete checkup. The exam included every machine and process imaginable and ended with a buffet lunch and Starbucks.
We had traveled to Bangkok many times since 1983, but this was the first time we used it as a jumping-off point for Cambodia. The mid-eighties were not a healthy time to be in Cambodia. But it was 2015 and the killing fields of Cambodia were a generation in the past. AirAsia flew to the edge of the ancient city of Angkor for only $50 to $60 dollars each way.
Ta Prohm is also known as the “Tomb Raider” temple as in the movie with Angelina Jolie. It was actually a monastery built at the turn of the 13th century. Ta Prohm is only one of a thousand temple complexes in Angkor.
