That New Phone is Not What You Need, Hear Me out Before it’s Too Late!!
You can’t compare the kiss of the wind with an impulse purchase at a store…
The goddamn LUXURY
I realized something obvious: we often look for luxury and get ourselves into debt just for the sake of having something that most of the time we don’t need. Ephemeral things that will possibly last less than 5 years, like a new phone or gadget.
We buy those goods with money, but it represents something bigger. It represents the amount of hours we worked to get them.
Let’s say you earn $20 per hour. Buying that wonderful, brand new iPhone 15 that costs around $1000… With some simple math, you may realize it’s worth 50 hours of work… 50 hours!!
And that is when you live in a first-world country where $20 per hour is something common (and even considered low). Now imagine in other places where that same phone could cost you 100, or even 200 hours of work.
But you are going to work those hours anyway, so why do I bother making this article… Or:
Having lived that
Traveling to the beach, swimming at a lake with friends, going to the cinema, and laughing at how bad the movie was.
having gone to an old town, having done a certain outdoor activity, anything that you can remember with a smile on your face. Those are all experiences.
Experiences! That is all we carry, what will remain with us across our lives.
I realized this pretty soon in my life, and to be honest, that’s an awesome privilege.
When I had my first trip outside of my home province, 1000 km away (the one I talked about in a separate article), I had an amazing time and experienced so many different things I never thought I’d experience. So when I had my flight back home, I wasn’t sad…
I was eager, incredibly eager to tell my family what had happened. I told them with so much enthusiasm that they got happy too!
And now that I think about these memories, I’m feeling great again just for remembering them once more!
And then I realized these things were 10 times more worthy to invest in, rather than the 3 or 4 days of happiness that a new monitor I don’t need but wanted could give me 😅.
Don’t get me wrong.
I’m not saying don’t buy a phone… what I’m trying to say is: did you need to buy that expensive iPhone or similar?
Have you ever questioned whether you were ever going to use all of its features and its fullest potential?
Unfortunately, most of us struggle to impress others. We buy just for the status, we dress to impress, have fancy dinners so that our neighbor can think we are “someone“…
Experiences are the only thing that will remain with us during all of our lives, that memorable trip with friends where you did so much stuff and met so many interesting people that you will even share with your grandchildren in the future.
That story you’ll never be able to forget, nor want to.
Things you can’t easily put a price to, unlike items/goods, because…
“What price does a fragment of happiness and life have?“
Difficult question, right? 😅
Your Part Now!!
Now reconsider whenever you want to buy that expensive thing that’s not going to bring you any further joy in your life. Buy the good but affordable one, save that money, and do that thing you always wanted to do with your friends, parents, siblings, children, or whoever.
Go climb that mountain, bungee jump, throw yourself from a helicopter, spend some days in another city, watch that play in the theater, just do it!
You’re not gonna take that 80” TV to the grave, but rather it’s gonna break in the next 10 years, in contrast to the experience of… Having lived.
Now tell me, what experience is itching in your heart and soul, that you’re craving to live?
