The world’s ten smallest countries
These countries’ combined land area is smaller than that of many cities.
There are 194 countries in the world, many of which cover large areas, but there are also tiny countries. These remote countries, less than 400 square kilometers, are primarily found in Europe, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. The world’s ten smallest countries cover a total area of 1491.4 square kilometers, which is less than the area of Houston, Texas, which is not even the largest city in the United States — 1625.2 square kilometers. Despite this, most of these countries are among the richest in the world.
Malta has a land area of 316 km2
The Republic of Malta comprises three islands: Gozo, Comino, and Malta, the largest of the three. This small country has over 450,000 people, making it one of the world’s most densely populated countries.
Maldives — 300 square kilometers
The Maldives, a popular tourist destination in the Indian Ocean, is Asia’s smallest country in terms of area and population. Over the years, the government has been occupied by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, and it gained independence in 1965.
Saint Kitts and Nevis has a land area of 261 square kilometers
Saint Kitts and Nevis, the West Indies’ mother colony, comprises two Caribbean islands. Saint Kitts and Nevis were among the first European islands to be settled.

Marshall Islands is a Pacific Ocean island country located halfway between the US state of Hawaii and the Australian mainland. The government is a part of Micronesia.
Liechtenstein has a land area of 160 km2
German-speaking Liechtenstein is the only country globally that is surrounded by the Alps. Liechtenstein, which borders Switzerland and Austria, is the wealthiest country in the world in terms of GDP per capita. Because Liechtenstein, which a prince rules, does not have an airport, the nearest one is in Zurich. You can only enter the country through Switzerland or Austria.
San Marino has a land area of 61 km2
San Marino San Marino, surrounded by Italy, is the world’s oldest surviving sovereign state and one of the richest in terms of GDP per capita. It is Europe’s third smallest country, with a population of only 30,000 people and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world.
Nauru — 21 square kilometers
Nauru is the world’s smallest island country, located east of Australia. Formerly known as Pleasant Island, its phosphate resources are depleted, resulting in a national unemployment rate of 90%, with the government employing the remaining 10%. Nauru is also known as the world’s most obese country, with 97 percent of men and 93 percent of women obese or overweight.
Monaco — 2 square kilometers
The Principality of Monaco, located on the French Riviera. Monaco, which borders France on three sides and the Mediterranean Sea on the fourth, has over 36,000 people and is the world’s most densely populated country.
Vatican City — 0.44 square kilometers
The city-country is entirely within the boundaries of Rome. It also houses the world’s largest church, St Peter’s Basilica, which houses some of its most important works of art.
