Resting is an art, and like all art forms, it takes practice, most of the time, a little bit of trial and error. Everyone is unique.

If you’re anything like me, you might have once thought rest meant getting on the couch after a long day, scrolling aimlessly on your smartphone, or binge-watching Netflix.

What does rest really mean?

Rest isn’t just the lack of activity.

It’s the presence of rejuvenation.

It’s not about stopping everything but about engaging in activities — or the lack thereof — that restore you.

Psychologists differentiate between active and passive rest.

Active rest might involve peaceful activities like yoga, reading, or engaging in your favorite hobby that brings you joy.

Many of us think we’re resting, but we’re actually in limbo — neither fully relaxed nor fully engaged.

Why is rest so important?

Science backs up the importance of rest in more ways than one.

When we rest, our brain processes information, stores memories, and gets rid of toxins.
