I’ve been writing for more than a year now.

It has been a transformative journey and I love it.

There were highs and lows.

Sometimes, I felt so sad and frustrated that I thought I couldn’t continue.

But yet I keep writing.

I want to share the five best ways I delay-gratify myself and commit to long-term growth to live my best life so you can.

Let’s dive in.

Way #1: Use your emotions as energy

Never suppress your emotions.

Don’t give up if you’re sad and frustrated at your growth.

Instead, use those emotions as fuel to push yourself to do better.

“Use your emotions in your favour, not against yourself.” — Robert Kiyosaki

There are days I feel very down because of my slow writing growth.

Today was one of those days, but I turned my emotions into energy, and I’m writing this blog post.

How I do it:

  • I don’t compare myself to others.
  • When I feel I can’t go on, I picture myself in the next three years.
  • Then, I turn that negative emotion into fuel to keep pushing on.

Way #2: Hate what you don’t like

Many things in the world waste your time, like entertainment and games.

These are your enemies.

And you must do whatever you can to hate and avoid them.

“Hate what wastes your time, for time is what life is made up of.” — Bruce Lee

Because I avoid what wastes my time, I have more time to work on things that will help me in the long term.

What I do:

  • I minimize my entertainment time on Netflix and social media.
  • I have a screen time limit for how long I can use my phone daily.
  • And I avoid doing things that drain my energy, like playing games.
  • Instead, I use my time on things that will help me in the long run, like praying, writing, and working out.

Way #3: Avoid triggers

Some things you do now make you lose focus and will destroy you in the long run.

Avoid them and the triggers that make you do them.

This way, you have more time to do what will help you in the future.

“One must never lose time in vainly regretting the past or in complaining about the changes which cause us discomfort.”— Anton Chekhov

There are things I love doing now I must avoid or it will destroy me in the future.

I avoid their triggers, so I don’t do them and have time for something meaningful.

How I do it:

  • I avoid thinking about my past regrets.
  • I refrain from convincing stubborn people about the best way to do things.
  • I don’t complain about changes. Instead, I use it to do something for my future.

Way #4: Create a patient mindset

To delay gratifying yourself, you must know that what you want won’t come because you want it.

You must be patient and work hard for a long time.

And you must learn and adapt before it comes to you.

“Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting.” — Joyce Meyer

My patient mindset is what has kept me writing for over a year.

It’s what helps me delay-gratify myself to live my best life.

What I do:

  • I tell myself that what I want won’t come until I work hard for a long time.
  • I keep working hard even when frustrated or sad about my results.
  • I continuously learn and adapt to improve my skills.

Way #5: Do it for the glory of God.

Your why should be to glorify God through your life, and to help your family and strangers.

When these are the reasons you’re doing what you’re doing,

It’s easier to practice delayed gratification.

“I give all the glory to God. It’s a win-win situation. The glory goes up to Him and the blessings fall on me.” Gabby Douglas

I do everything for the glory of God.

And I don’t give up because I want God to be glorified.

How I do it:

  • If people ask how I became successful, I say it’s because of God.
  • I give God the praise for how my life is.
  • And I thank him all the time for what he does for me.

The best five simple ways to delay gratify yourself to live your best life:

  • Use your emotions as fuel to push yourself to do better.
  • Hate and avoid the things that waste your time, like entertainment and games.
  • Avoid triggers.
  • Be patient. Work hard. Learn. Adapt. Do these things for a long time.
  • Do everything to glorify God’s name.

When you choose instant gratification, you destroy your life.

But the opposite is true for delayed gratification.

So always commit to long-term growth.
