Going Back to Work: A Real-World Lesson in Human Behavior

What returning to work after an 8-year hiatus from the public taught me about human nature.

I am not a psychologist, but I am fascinated by psychology. So, returning to the “real world” and getting a job that works with the public has been an absolute adventure in human behavior.

Dear mental health workers… I encourage you to take on a part-time job in the service industry — even if it is just for a few weeks. You need to experience what the world is really like.

I have been amazed.

Just four short years after people lost their minds because restaurants and bars were shut down, people went right back to their bad habits of berating service workers, expecting too much, and demanding slave labor.

It’s gross, but fortunately for me… I know this is a temporary stop-gap, so I can actually have a little fun with it.

I’m taking notes. Here’s what I’ve learned thus far.

1. Money does buy privilege — apparently, it also exempts the wealthy from common courtesy.

Where I work, we have a “VIP clientele” — people who spend millions in our establishment every year. While I can certainly understand why they get preferential…
