The Difference Between 20,000 and 70,000 Views on Medium

And why the smaller article was, surprisingly, much more beneficial

Building a following on Medium is not an easy task — especially when you are starting from scratch with your follower count at zero.

And while most of us do love the process of creating content, I’m sure many would agree that seeing a story perform well makes the hobby even more rewarding.

However, I recently learned that generating a lot of views on Medium is not necessarily going to make your follower count boom. Sometimes, it’s the smaller articles that can make the biggest difference.

How did I discover this? Well, a small detail in the stats page (that I often overlooked) turned out to completely change the way I look at engagement on the platform.

And this small detail was demonstrated perfectly on two of my Medium stories.

Introducing the stories in question

The two articles I was analysing ahead of this piece also happen to be the most successful pieces I have written so far on Medium. The first is an article about Apple’s clever business tactics, while the second is about learning how to solve the Rubik’s Cube puzzle.
