The Drinks Package On Our Cruise Has Started Something Unexpected
I only hope it lasts
My wife and I recently enjoyed our annual holiday. We took a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords, and although we didn’t see any fjords (that’s another story, and something our cruise operator is going to need to address with several people on the cruise, I’m sure), we had a wonderfully relaxing time.
We decided to treat ourselves to the ‘drinks package’ on this occasion, which means you pre-pay for a selection of drinks. It probably works out a little more expensive, but what it does is stop you from feeling guilty when you order another glass of wine with dinner.
The drinks package entitles you to around 15 drinks a day per person, and whilst the drinks don’t have to be alcoholic (tea, coffee and water are also included), I did see it, perhaps wrongly, as a daily challenge of how close I could get to my 15-drink quota.
What it meant was that instead of having one cocktail before dinner, I felt obliged to have 2, instead of one glass of wine, I’d have two or three, then a dessert wine, followed by cocktails after dinner and maybe a drink in the casino that evening.
It also meant guilt-free drinking at lunchtime when I would happily have two or three pints of lager with my meal, far beyond what I would…
