The dawning of the age of technology
As recently as the 1990s, most people relied on the local library as their primary source of knowledge, where it was hit or miss to find books on the subject that interested them. Few bookstores existed, and their selections were small compared to typical bookstores of today. The idea of accessing a vast selection of books — like what we now see on Amazon — was unimaginable back then.
I remember my parents purchasing a set of encyclopedias in the 1960s. I thought I had found the font of all knowledge. The smell of opening the first pages and the wooden bookshelf that came with them was magical. Back then, encyclopedias were sold door-to-door, and the salesman’s pitch was hard to resist. Regardless of how little money my parents had at the time, the salesman made some compelling arguments.
