From the earliest times in history, man has tried to protect himself from misfortune by using objects considered holy or otherwise magically potent.
He used objects close to his person as an article of clothing or an ornament, believing that evil spirits, a cause of misfortune, would not dare attack one so protected. Thus, the custom developed.
