Let’s start with the 1920s, when flapper dresses and bob haircuts were all the rage. It was a time of rebellion against traditional values, and fashion was no exception. Women ditched their corsets and long skirts in favor of shorter, looser dresses that allowed for greater freedom of movement. The look was daring and unconventional, and I can’t help but admire the spirit of those flappers.

In the 1930s, the Great Depression had a profound impact on fashion. Clothes became simpler and more practical, with muted colors and less extravagant designs. It was a time of austerity, and fashion reflected that. But the 1940s saw a return to glamour, with women wearing structured suits and dresses that emphasized their curves. Think Joan Crawford and her shoulder pads.

The 1950s were all about the hourglass figure, with full skirts and cinched-in waists. It was a time of conservative values, but fashion still managed to be playful and fun. And who can forget the iconic poodle skirt?

The 1960s brought a radical shift in fashion, with mini skirts and bold prints taking center stage. It was a time of cultural revolution, and fashion reflected that. The Beatles’ influence on fashion can’t be overstated, with their mop-top haircuts and mod suits inspiring countless imitators.

The 1970s were all about disco, with bell-bottoms, platform shoes, and shiny fabrics ruling the day. It was a time of excess and indulgence, and fashion was no exception. I can’t say I’m a fan of this particular trend, but it’s certainly memorable.

The 1980s were a time of power dressing, with women wearing sharp suits and shoulder pads that made them look like they meant business. It was a time of conspicuous consumption, and fashion reflected that. But the 1990s brought a more relaxed and understated style, with grunge fashion and oversized clothing dominating the scene.

And then there’s the 2000s, which I like to call the “Y2K” era of fashion. It was a time of experimentation and boundary-pushing, with low-rise jeans, crop tops, and chunky sneakers all vying for attention. It was a time when anything goes, and sometimes I wonder if we went a little too far.

Ah, the 2010s, the decade that saw the rise of social media influencers and the “fast fashion” industry. It was a time when trends changed almost as quickly as they were created, with Instagram and TikTok dictating what was “in” and what was “out.” It seemed like every week there was a new “must-have” item, whether it was a pair of “dad sneakers” or a “tiny sunglasses” that barely shielded your eyes from the sun.

But amidst all the noise, there were a few trends that stood out to me as truly iconic. The rise of streetwear and athleisure, for example, has been a game-changer. Suddenly, it was cool to wear sweatpants and sneakers everywhere, and high-end fashion brands were collaborating with streetwear labels to create limited-edition collections that sold out within minutes.

And then there was the resurgence of ’90s fashion, with slip dresses, chokers, and oversized denim jackets making a comeback. It was a nostalgia trip that I was all too happy to take, and it was interesting to see how these retro styles were reinterpreted for a modern audience.

But perhaps the most significant trend of the 2010s was the growing awareness of sustainability in fashion. As consumers became more conscious of the environmental impact of fast fashion, there was a greater demand for eco-friendly and ethical clothing. Slow fashion brands and vintage clothing stores began to gain popularity, and more designers started incorporating sustainable practices into their work.

Looking ahead to the 2020s, it’s hard to say what the next big trend will be. With the pandemic, fashion has taken a backseat to more pressing concerns. But I have a feeling that when things finally start to return to normal, we’ll see a renewed appreciation for quality, timeless pieces that can be worn for years to come. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll see the return of the flapper dress.

Hey, a girl can dream.
