The Evolution of Women in Cinema

Or how it really hasn’t changed at all

Women in film and TV have always been identified as an object. In the early days of movies like Grease, Footloose, and Happy Days women were always shown as giggling creatures, rebelling from their parents by sneaking away and wearing clothes that were way too short or revealing. In most recent years there has been a change in the portrayal of women on the screen. Gone are the days where women had to wait to be saved. In many of the Fairy tales that have been redone in the most recent years a lot of time, the Princesses of those movies are generally the ones who are saving the Princes of the Kingdom.

Fairy Tales more like Folk Tales after all

Since 2010, we have been given a massive amount of live-action remakes of old Disney movies. Two different versions of Snow White, Lily James’ Cinderella, Mulan, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and my personal favorite Maleficient. All these movies have been done with the biggest respect to the animated movies that came before them. Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and Mulan were all based in the different countries the story originated from. While most of them weren’t sing-a-long type movies, much to the chagrin of the children that had grown up with them, I think these movies have their own specific flair…
