Americans have lost confidence in their government. We no longer trust our legislators to effectively deal with our country’s problems: income inequality, affordable health care, the economy, and climate change. Governance has become a series of battles. It’s no longer just political ideology. We are at war with each other over cultural issues while our politicians ignore our basic needs.

Many have said this before, but it bears repeating. This is not an issue of “bothsidesism.” It’s a false equivalence to blame equally the Republicans and the Democrats. The GOP keeps churning out cultural wedge issues, such as teaching critical race theory or the mere mention of LGBTQ+ in our K-12 schools. And they ban important books that tell a more realistic history of the American experience. Republicans’ propaganda — that the Democrats are making race personal, making Whites feel responsible for our past racism — is a canard. What Democrats are saying is that racism is systematic: our present reflects our past. And that past is not an illusion.

Tennessee Republican Senator Marcia Blackburn asked Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson to define a woman. And Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert tweets on Mother’s Day, “Do we still need to be a biologist to wish moms a Happy Mother’s Day?” All the while, women’s rights are close to being eradicated.
