I have a friend who loves to collage. That’s one of her things. She collages in a variety of places — sometimes in an art journal and sometimes in an altered book. Other places, too. I asked questions out of curiosity and that lead to YouTube videos which lead to more YouTube videos.

My friend mentioned junk journals, and I watched some videos about them. I was surprised at how many people created junk journals, how it’s done, and the variety of them.

So, what is a junk journal? It’s a journal used for journaling and/or collaging or creating art with other techniques. Some are handmade and hand-sewn. Some are created with already bound books like composition notebooks or other books. They’re like a cousin to Smash Books.

The handmade ones are the ones that fascinate me.

They have paper of all kinds in them. Lined, unlined, graph paper, artsy-looking pages from magazines, maps, sheet music, colored paper, dyed paper, faux paper, handmade paper, doilies, pages torn from books, greeting cards, and more.

And the bindings…the papers are bound in bundles with thread or string, and the bundles…
