Inescapable. It seems that for as long as human history has existed, we have engaged in battle over some sort of disagreement. A cycle that has yet to find its conclusion. recent times, at least on the more developed side of the world, war as a concept has been almost forgotten. Time away from the harshness of combat has caused us to think less about that part of our history. Of our nature. But even the most exhausted of beasts must eventually rise from its slumber.

As I sit here and write these words in relative comfort, in a room heated to perfection and a cushioned chair, a man is preparing to take his final breath. and on that breath, he will whisper the names of a wife that will never again embrace him. Children whose wide eyes will never again be laid upon him. Parents who will bury their son if his remains escape the mass grave. A grim fate, and even then he is one of the lucky ones. At least he has the time to think about his life before he succumbs to his wounds. Imagine now the soldier who can only think of the sensation of his flesh as his cries of pain are drowned out by flames.

As I sit here and think about the ache in my back that I have complained about numerous times in the past, I urge everyone to take a moment to think about what it is we all have to lose. Suffering has been part of the human condition since life began. Let us not forget the immense pain that is and always has been. Do not let comfort blind you to reality. Recent acts of war that I will not mention here for clicks or for views has shown us how truly fragile our idea of peace is. We believe the beast of war is rising from its slumber, but the truth is it has always kept an eye open. It has only now has begun to turn its gaze.

So, what is the meaning of war? Why can the beast never stay asleep? There is no meaning. War is cause and effect. All it has ever been is to damage an enemy so much so that he can no longer fight. The essence of violence itself. So no, there is no meaning in the death of so many. At least no inherent meaning. The sacrifice of the sufferers of war is only meaningless if we let it be. Learn from the pain and create a better world for the next cycle of humanity.

War…war never changes.
