Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek is an inspiring book that includes the remarkable story of an Air Force pilot named Johnny Bravo. This story has profoundly impacted me, and I can’t stop thinking about it.

August 16, 2002

When he sensed that the men below were in danger, Johnny Bravo was thousands of feet above the danger zone, sitting in his A-10 aircraft.

As he prepared to check on his troops, he heard the call, “Troops in contact.” Even with zero visibility due to the cloudy weather, he risked his life to save the troops on the ground. He locked his guns and kept shooting until he ran out of ammunition. Fortunately, every soldier went home alive that night.

When employees know that their leaders are eager to advocate for their needs, they are more likely to go the extra mile to serve the organization. In the same way, the troops fought harder when they knew Bravo was willing to sacrifice his own life to save them. Bravo was empathetic and understood how the troops felt and what he needed to do.

Empathy is a valuable trait that enables you to place yourself in other people’s shoes and understand how they feel.
