Work-life balance is a phrase we hear tossed around all too frequently, but what does it mean?

By definition it refers to the amount of time you spend doing your job compared with the amount of time you spend with your family and doing things you enjoy outside of work.

It sounds wonderful and reasonable, doesn’t it? The reality, however, is much different and scarcely resembles this idyllic concept.

The farce that is work-life balance

Many employers stress their belief in this work-life balance concept whether because they truly believe it, or out of a sense of obligation. Either way the reality is much different.

We live in an always connected world. We have cell phones with apps that keep us within arms reach of everyone anywhere. Phone, text, email are all standard on every cell phone. This means that there are multiple ways that our professional lives can intertwine with our personal lives whether we want them to or not, regardless of the work-life balance myth.

How can there ever truly be a separation of our professional and personal lives when we are always connected?
