On a sweltering summer afternoon in 1929, 68-year-old Gustavo Martinez Naranjo was setting up his easel along the banks of the Guadalquivir River in Seville. The painter’s long-time model had suddenly quit and he had a pile of commissions backed up in the studio. Señor Gustavo was president of the Academia de Bellas Artes and a painter of naked women.
