The Power of Parents

When we’re kids, our parents look like superheroes.

They know how to do everything.
They know where everything is.
They drive.
They pay for things.

They do it all.

As time goes on, we approach the age at which our parents became parents. My mom gave birth to me at 24. My dad was 33.

I’m 21 and I’m not out of the house (not even close), don’t have a partner, don’t have a career… It’s a very different time and it’s only been 21 years.

But the one thing that I don’t believe will ever change is the power of our parents. Specifically, where that power comes from.

Sure, if my mom says something, I obey because she’s my mom and I respect her. But there’s more to it. Sometimes I do stuff I wouldn’t if I had…

Money.

Realistically, it’s the only thing that makes them have power over me.

I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, or that they “abuse” their power. Not at all.

But they have power over me nonetheless.

I just have to obey more because I live under their roof.

They say “clean the dishes”, and I clean the dishes.

I have a very long list of universities from which I've dropped out. I've learned a lot just by being thrown around by life.
