Florida education is headed for the precipice
This is how it starts
As if all of the recent Florida book bans in school libraries wasn’t enough, they’ve gone a step further; inching towards banning Shakespeare outright from the classroom. Now, you may think to yourself, “Oh, that’s silly hyperbole. They’re still planning on using excerpts from his plays. They’re just removing all the suggestive and sexual innuendo and slang out of it”. Here’s the problem with that: unless you are a Shakespearean scholar, which I am not, some of the less obvious innuendo will be missed and it will be missed and it will still end up creeping into the classrooms anyway. Due to the “Don’t say gay” bill, Florida has it set up to where all it takes is for one parent or student to object and the teaching material gets yanked pending an investigation into the allegations. Meanwhile, the students are left in limbo while they wait for material to be re approved. This is madness! Given the fact that Mom’s for Liberty and other fascist Right Wing watch dog groups don’t bother with reading or nuance, it would actually be easier and less time consuming of Florida schools just ban the material outright and be done with it.
Reeks of 1984
Now, the question becomes, How do they enforce this law? Do you dial 911 to report the offending material and summon the police to arrest the offending teacher? Imagine the civil courts tied up with endless lawsuits of parents filed against teachers, teachers filed against schools who fired them even though the teacher’s material was pre-approved to begin with. Right Wing ignorant reactionary parents will by burying the entire Florida education system in a deluge of lawsuits because their child heard something in science class that went against and challenged their delicate pride and their delusional biblical worldview. Oh, and speaking of 1984, Right Wing fascist parents already tried getting 1984 banned. How’s that for irony?
