The Recipe For Life
A poem.
Graduate
Get married
Have kids
A successful career
Grandkids, of course
Die happy
Wealthy
At peace
The recipe for life
They say it like it is easy
The tick box to check off
Tick, tick
Tick
Don’t forget to smile
And so why does each step feel like Everest to surmount
Before barely recovering to face the next?
The ordinariness of a normal life
The normalness of the ordinary
Requires a wisdom, a patience, a grit
That I am not sure I have
To wake up every day
Eat healthy
Wash the dishes
Mow the lawn
Wash the uniforms
Pay the bills
Go to work
Stick through it
And see it through
All the boring things that scaffold the extraordinary
My journey, at least in this life,
Maybe to grow these ingredients
To nourish their steady evolution
So that I may be more prepared for the real deal
In my next life.
