The Rise and Fall of Family Vloggers

And all the reasons why something needs to change.

It all started with «Kate Plus 8». For 10 years, TLC ran the show of a family with two sets of twins totaling eight children. The public followed along as the children grew older, and the family became a brand.

For anyone who stopped watching a long time ago (like myself) what unfolded is a “fame gone wrong” type of situation. The couple got divorced. The children’s custody was anything but smooth. Some kids currently live with their mother and others with their father. In short, the picture of a perfect family displayed on television was fake.

The rise of family vloggers

With the growth of social media, family shows moved to Youtube. From the Ace family (19 million subscribers) to the Eight passengers (2,37 million subscribers) to The bucket list family (1,36 million subscribers). All of this and many more channels display the daily lives of their families on Youtube.

Like any other social media platform, algorithms and trends dominate Youtube. Family channels have been rising for several years. Scrolling through some of these channels makes it very easy to spot trends. Adoption, especially international adoption, was responsible for the growth of a lot of family channels…
