The Rookie came out in 2018 and has been running for a total of five seasons so far. The Rookie is based out of Los Angeles, California. The show shows the perspective of a police officer riding in the car and bodycam footage. The show portrays what life is like for first responders, both police and fire. In addition, the show showcases the personal lives of each first responder, the stresses of the job, the police union presidential election, and the calls that police, fire, and medical respond to.

The main character of the show is John Nolan (played by Nathan Fillion) who pursued his dream of becoming a police officer at the age of 40. He is the oldest patrol member of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). During his time on duty, he responds to calls such as fleeing cars from a crime scene, robberies, and burglaries. In addition, he conducts traffic stops. In addition, he speaks on the radio to notify dispatch of what is happening and informs other patrol officers and first responders of the situation that may need to respond to the scene. Over the course of the series, John Nolan decided to run for the LAPD police union president.

John Nolan takes his job home with him sometimes. However, he has a family that he talks to and comes to visit. He has a son, who got engaged to a female who was interested in joining the LAPD. When John Nolan went back to duty, he decided to run a criminal background check on his soon-to-be daughter-in-law without ever asking her first if she has any criminal record. He obtained it, however, he chose not to look at the results. He allowed his son and soon-to-be daughter-in-law to confide in him about any prior criminal history.

The two main female stars of the show are Harper (Mekia Cox) and Lucy (Melissa O’Neil). Both female officers are determined, ambitious, and take no nonsense. The two female officers showcased outstanding police work while developing their skills while out on patrol. Lucy and Harper were then promoted to the detective squad. Lucy and Harper go undercover for certain criminal investigations they are conducting.

The personal lives of Lucy and Harper are very similar. During an off-duty hangout with friends, viewers of the show soon learn that Lucy was a victim of a crime, who fought hard to escape and survive. Over the course of the show, Lucy begins to date another patrol officer, who soon becomes a criminal defense attorney. Harper has a kid and is going through a custody battle with her ex-husband.

I recommend the show. It has various angles to it and showcases each of the patrol and detective members’ personal lives while showcasing the life of a police officer.
