The Surprising History of Why We Celebrate Father’s Day
How Father’s Day came to be and why it became a national Holiday
Father’s Day is right around the corner, and it brings up many questions just as it does every other year.
The most common among these questions are, “What are we going to get Dad this year?”, and “Does he really need another History book he won’t read?”.
However, a question I’ve always had around this holiday is, “How did this celebration come to be?”.
Was it due to the greeting card companies? Did Mother’s Day come first and the Dads got jealous and made their own holiday?
This article dives into both of these questions to shed light on the tradition of Father’s Day, and the details around its origin are indeed surprising.
An Age Old Celebration… Or Is It?
How many years would you guess that Father’s Day has been celebrated in America for?
75? 100? 125?
Only 51 years. That’s not a typo.
Father’s Day has only been a nationwide holiday since 1972. The fact that many Father’s and Grandfather’s alive are older than this tradition completely baffled me.
