It was the year 2020 when I had to prepare for my college entrance examinations.

In India, JEE Mains is one of the most difficult and competitive entrance exams and I spent a whole year preparing for it, studying for 6–8 hours every single day.

The irritation that came with studying things that did not interest me was enough to demotivate me but I had to keep going.

I am no quitter.

That’s where the 2-minute rule helped me to build momentum, stick to my routine, and get into the college of my dreams…

Motivation Will Fail You When You Need It The Most

Motivation is a fickle fuel that will fail you when you need it the most. You cannot rely on it. That is where building a routine will help you.

Habits and routines remove motivation from the picture entirely, allowing you to work effortlessly without it and channel your productivity at will. BUT how do you create a routine when getting yourself to begin seems to be the hardest thing to do?

The Magical Effects of The 2-Minute Rule

Taking action is so freaking hard because we get overwhelmed by the mountain of tasks ahead of us. We get paralyzed.

But the solution is simple.

Make the barrier of entry so low, that not getting started feels bizarre.

Instead of trying to work for an hour or more, which you will put off for tomorrow anyway — a tomorrow that never comes — set a timer for only 2 minutes.

In those 2 minutes, you don’t even have to work. Clean your working environment and just set it up. You don’t need to begin doing anything yet.

Here’s the thing…

Your Brain Is Easy to Fool. Trick Your Brain to Help You Instead of Hinder…

The whole idea is to trick your brain into thinking it has already begun working. To make you feel you are ready.

At the end of those 2 minutes, you’ll feel that you might as well get started since you already feel ready. So set another timer—a timer for 5 minutes or 10.

Now get to work. After those 5 minutes, if you feel you are done for the day, great! Call it a day. But more often than not, you would not like to break the momentum. If you have already begun, why not continue? And therefore, you will.

The 2-minute rule reduces the barrier of entry so much that not working feels stupid. It gets your brain juices flowing and removes your dependency on motivation.

Use this simple technique next time you find it hard to begin and channel your productivity at will without having to rely on the ever-fleeting motivation ever again.
