The Walk with the Most Benefits in the World
Everybody’s talking about a new way of walking…
These days it is increasingly common to see groups of people on the street or in the countryside who have gone for a walk with canes. They are doing an activity that fuses traditional walking with the use of specially designed poles similar to those used by skiers and hikers.
This fusion is called Nordic Walking. It emerged almost 100 years ago in Finland. But a century later, its practitioners are spread all over Europe and the world. Where I am in Spain is no exception.
The origins of this sport are in the 1930’s, when most cross-country skiers began to include it in their summer and autumn training and called it “walking with poles”. It improved their physical condition and enabled them to carry out their winter training with the right preparation.
Nordic walking has expanded mainly for the reason that it is an easy sport to perform, perfect for weight loss and fitness, affordable and low impact. Using poles helps distribute weight and reduces stress on lower-body joints, which is particularly beneficial for individuals with knee or hip issues.
