Whenever you read the history of the Cuban Revolution, you will find the actual revolutionary character of those who fought for their struggle and played a significant role in wartime.

Early Days

It is hard to determine and get information on the exact number of women who were involved in the revolutionary movement but like other women some brave rebel women played significant roles and became long-lasting characters of the Cuban revolution such as Celia Sanchez, Vilma Lucila Espín Guillois, Melba Hernández, Haydée Santamaría and others.

In times of struggle for justice and peace, and during the war not only men but Cubans some brave fighters women played a significant role in the history of the Cuban Revolution. Besides contributing to their behind-the-scenes work, they also fought actually in guerilla wartime operations.

Celia Sánchez was born on May 9, 1920, in Media Luna, a town in the southeastern part of the country, near the Caribbean Sea.

Celia Sánchez’s mother Acacia died when she was six years old. She suffered from depression losing her mom in early childhood. Celia finished high school but couldn’t go to university.
