Can you be sure that there are conscious beings other than yourself?
It’s a hard question to answer…
Descartes' famous theory states that the only idea that cannot be doubted is the idea of your own existence.
Because for you to doubt something, you must think.
And for you to think, you must exist.
But other than yourself, how can you prove the existence of other people around you?
How can you be sure that you aren’t just in a deep dream and that your imagination makes up everything you see around you?
…And even if you aren’t in a dream and there exist other people around you, how can you be sure that they aren’t just moving biological robots that are programmed to act and speak as if they are conscious?
As we’ve seen from recent technological innovations, AI is becoming more and more human-like.
Take GPT-3, for example, an AI which can generate text and natural language almost as well as regular humans.
