Have you ever wondered how your coworker manages to type so quickly?

Every time you shoot her a message on Slack, the “is typing…” indicator pops up, and just 10 seconds later, she’s already responded with a small paragraph.

How is she typing so fast?

Is it because of genetics? Raw talent? Maybe she plays piano?

These things can help, sure. But none of them are the main reasons why she can type so rapidly.

Slow typing speed can mostly be attributed to a few bad keyboard habits.

Though I have a few bad habits of my own, I’m lucky enough to say that I’ve dropped most of them. And that’s in no small part due to the amount of time I spent playing typing games as a kid.

Back when I was in elementary school, I found myself drawn to typing games (sometimes more than Flash games). I’d hop on FreeTypingGame.net and spend hours practicing typing my homerow sequences like “jkl” or “salads.”

By the time I got to 3rd grade, I could touch type. Meaning I didn’t have to look at the keyboard at all.
