TikTok is the most popular social media platform for Gen Z today. Its user base has surpassed Instagram and other competitors, making it “the place” for influencers and marketers.

The lesser-known cousin

TikTok, as we all know, is a small-video sharing platform that has revolutionized “influencing.” It focuses on spontaneous content on arts, trending dance moves, lip syncs, and funny video clips, with no continuity of purpose or motivation.

ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, also owns another app, Douyin(抖音). A search for TikTok on any app store within Mainland China does not show TikTok but does surface the Douyin app, one featuring a similar app icon, produced and owned by the same company, with identical app pages and equally explosive user growth.

Douyin is a short video-sharing platform available exclusively within Mainland China. It is a content-focused platform targeting lifestyle improvements, hobbies, life hacks, travel, sports, education, pets, food, and such, all within videos of max 15mins in length.

Although owned by the same company (ByteDance), TikTok and Douyin are completely different entities. Users of TikTok and Douyin cannot interact with each other…
