You must have heard the fable of a fox and the grapes.
The fox tries to get hold of the grapes from a vine but is unable to reach them. After multiple failed attempts, he gives up and convinces himself that the grapes were not worth the try as they are sour.
Medium has become that vine for writers. A number of Medium members who want to earn money face disappointment as the earnings are not life-changing.
Whether you like it or not, the major reason why you are not earning on Medium is because your writing is not good enough. There is no point in blaming the platform.
So, what should you do?
Find the “Why”
Ask yourself, “Why do I want to write?”
For me, writing helps in getting better command of the English language, writing helps in clearing my thoughts, writing helps in excreting out all the thoughts that linger around, and publishing stories gives me the satisfaction of completing mini-projects.
If money is the only motivation for you to write, then I must warn you that for writers who have just started, it is hard to earn money writing.
