In my article Happy Chrishanakwanzaa, I discussed some holiday hosting mistakes that I’ve experienced. Hopefully, if you use these tips you can avoid festive faux pas:

Covid Update: Look for your state’s social gathering limits and guidelines and make sure you have the right space to safely entertain — with dining space 6 feet apart, proper ventilation i.e. windows that open to keep air circulating or an outdoor space.

Be an abilities ally and please make sure your space is accessible to someone with mobility issues so they can safely enter or exit. If your space has a lot of steps or is far from parking, you need to note that on your invitations. This type of surprise is not fun for guests.

  1. Plan: Check the calendar to make sure the date isn’t in conflict with any religious holiday or annual traditions like your office party, in-laws, etc.
  2. To thine own self be true, don’t assume people know your religious affiliation. It’s best to be open and honest about your celebration — the theme and purpose so you are guests aren’t put in an awkward situation
