Top of Google’s First Page, But Only 18 Medium Views? Let’s Figure Out Why!

Do you wonder why some Medium articles blow up and others don’t? Is it luck or the algorithm?

I have figured out why my most successful article got on Google’s first page but flopped on Medium.

My article got 438 views and 220 reads, but I only got 18 Medium member views and 8 Medium member reads! This means that only 3.6% of my reads came from Medium.

I couldn’t believe this when I first looked at the stats!

My article is currently 3rd on Google’s first page when you search, yogurt digital detox.

The article in question:

Why was it a success on Google?

  1. It was search engine optimised (obviously intentionally)

I re-read the article many times and I realized that it was suitable for Google’s search engine. The title was informative, concise, and readable and it wasn’t too long or short, 14 words.

The article also had an easy-to-read structure with 2 headings and 1 subheading. Google also loves outward links, and it had one link to the Yogurt company’s website.

2. The search is niche, so it ranked highly.

Yogurt Digital Detox isn’t something you search everyday, It is a search that doesn’t have many results, so less competition for my article.

Why did it fail on Medium?

This question is harder to figure out. I posted the article on Word Garden, which has 1.5k followers, so there was no shortage of an audience! I also used a captivating picture of money and put $10,000 in the headline.

The article was an eye-catching way to make a lot of money, and people always want more money, but it’s not the type of article Medium’s algorithm favors.

After Medium last changed its algorithm it said that it didn’t want “click-bait” articles that didn’t include personal experiences from the writer.

In my article, I mentioned my personal experiences only twice, so the lack of personal touch is why it failed on Medium.

Will you include more personal experiences in your articles?

Thank you for reading!
